The whispers around the Utah Jazz ever since Dante Exum went down with a season-ending knee injury have centered around the possibility that Utah would look to bring in a veteran point guard to aid in the team's run back to playoff contention. But as the days before training camp wind down, that's looking less and less likely.
According to a report from the Salt Lake City Tribune, the Jazz have a plan for their point guard position: Let the three young guys on the roster — Trey Burke, Bryce Cotton and Raul Neto — duke it out; if none emerges as a potential replacement, only then will Utah consider other options:
But the Tribune has learned the Jazz fully plan to go into training camp and the preseason with Burke, Neto and Cotton as their floor leaders. If things don't work out, the front office could take another course of action once the regular season begins in November. Or if someone makes a trade offer the Jazz would be fools to turn down, but that's a remote possibility. For now, Utah's content to go with its trio of playmakers and let them…..play.
The Tribune reports that the Jazz like each of the three point guards for different reasons. Neto offers the best passing and court vision skill set. Burke is the most polished player and the most proficient at the art of scoring, especially getting to the rim and drawing defenses in. And Cotton is the best at pushing the pace and keeping defenses off-balance.
Utah seemingly has a big decision on its hands. But in a different light, one can see the opportunities the Jazz have with this trio.
