Los Angeles Angels infielder Johnny Giavotella was dealt a 'very frustrating' hand when fourth nerve palsy led to vision troubles a few weeks back. The situation has kept him out of action for the Halos for quite some time, though he remained hopeful he'd be able to return this season.
Monday's update from Mike DiGiovanna of the Los Angeles Times brought with it a bit of positive outlook for Giavotella, as he's been cleared to resume practicing with the Angels on Tuesday.
Apparently, Giavotella's vision is 'still a little hazy' whenever he looks to his left…which could make returning to second base a challenge unless there's further improvement.
He'll also have to face live pitching and resume heavy defensive drills to re-acclimate himself with the rigors of the infield – as well as test his eyesight.
Once that happens, Giavotella told DiGiovanna that he's confident in his ability to ge back into 'game mode'. "I don't think it will be a quick transition from when I'm able to see 100% to getting into game situations," he said, "but that's up to Sosh."
As for manager Mike Scioscia, he told DiGiovanna that he'd welcome Giavotella back in the lineup, "But we'll cross that bridge when we come to it. First and foremost, Johnny has to show he's healthy."
