Hamhuis says any contract extension with Canucks will come during season

Vancouver defenseman Dan Hamhuis is slated to be a free agent next summer, but the British Columbia native is willing to talk with the organization during the season about a possible extension, according to a recent report from Pro Hockey Talk.

"We’ve talked a little bit with Jim through the summer, just where things are at," Hamhuis said to Pro Hockey Talk ahead of training camp. "Right now it looks like something that may be talked about through the season."

The 32-year-old is entering his sixth season with the Canucks, and he missed 22 games last season with a torn hip abductor. Hamhuis was still able to produce pretty well for Vancouver in the 59 games he did play last year, recording one goal and 22 assists.

There is a possibility the Canucks could look to trade Hamhuis during the season, however, as Vancouver is a team in transition and might be looking to shed some age in favor of longer potential.
