TEGUCIGALPA, Honduras (AP) The president of one of Honduras' most famed soccer clubs was scheduled to appear in federal court in Miami Wednesday following his arrest on money laundering charges, according to court documents.

Yankel Rosenthal was arrested Tuesday at Miami's airport. The Honduran presidency confirmed his arrest in a statement Tuesday night, saying it had been informed by the U.S. Embassy in Honduras.

Details on the charges were not immediately available and it was not known if Rosenthal had retained a lawyer.

Rosenthal heads the Marathon soccer club, which plays in the city of San Pedro Sula. It won its most recent championship in the 2009-2010 season.

The club released a statement late Tuesday through its official Twitter account telling fans that it had no information other than what was in the government's statement. It said it expected a statement from the club's directors on Wednesday.

Rosenthal also is a former minister in the government of President Juan Hernandez for investment promotion. He was appointed when Hernandez took office in January 2013 and left that position in June without an explanation.

He is the nephew of Jaime Rosenthal, a four-time presidential candidate from the opposition Liberal Party who also is one of Honduras' most powerful businessmen with holdings that include the Tiempo newspaper, Banco Continental and Hotel Copantl Sula.

Yankel Rosenthal's father, Edwin Rosenthal, is also an important businessman.
