Report: Suns to host scrimmage at their original arena

Updated Sep 15, 2015 at 3:15p ET

As the Phoenix Suns look to move forward into a new era that includes a return to the playoffs, the team is also looking back to its largely successful past.

The Suns are Arizona's original professional sports team; their inaugural season came in 1968-69, when the Suns played in the Veterans Memorial Coliseum on the Arizona State Fairgrounds, which is one of the more Arizona-esque sentences that's ever been typed. And as part of the team's "WeArePHX" marketing campaign this year, which celebrates the Suns' status in the city and state, Phoenix will hold a public scrimmage at the Memorial Coliseum on October 3, according to Paul Coro of the Arizona Republic.

The Suns will be at NAU in Flagstaff for training camp, as has been the team's tradition, and the plan is to hold one last practice on campus in the morning before traveling to Phoenix for the night's open scrimmage.

As Coro notes, coach Jeff Hornacek was a member of the Suns team that played the final game at Veterans Memorial Coliseum at the end of the 1991-92 season.
