Team of the future: Kings unveil plans for solar panels on new arena

While the Sacramento Kings hope that DeMarcus Cousins and his teammates can bring the energy inside the Kings' new arena, Golden 1 Center, there will be all sorts of electricity on the outside as well.

According to a report from Tony Bizjak of the Sacramento Bee, the Kings unveiled their partnership with SPI Solar this week. The company will be designing and building a multi-million dollar solar array on the roof of the new arena, consisting of 3,300 panels and reportedly providing 15 percent of the facility's power.

Bizjak reports that SPI Solar has also invested capital in the construction of the arena. The Kings, in turn, will provide signage and promotion for the company on top of paying for the electricity.

SPI Solar's chief strategy officer, Steve Kircher, told Bizjak that aesthetics would be a consideration in the array:

"It’s going to be gorgeous," Kircher said. "When you see Staples Center presented, you always see the roof as the main photographed opportunity. We think that will happen here, too."

Of course, one of the fun reasons to show aerial shots in Los Angeles is the traffic, too, which runs right by the Staples Center. But with its bejeweled crown, the Kings' new arena, which is scheduled to be home to the team starting with the 2016-17 season, will make for splendid shots as well.
