AUSTIN, Texas (AP) University of Texas President Greg Fenves has confirmed that athletic director Steve Patterson is out of the Longhorns' program, calling it a ''mutual decision'' that Patterson leave after less than two years on the job.
Patterson's 22 months in Austin were marked by an aggressive push for more money at the nation's wealthiest athletic program, and discontent among fans and some major donors. Fenves said he had been concerned about Texas fans and how they view the program.
Fenves met with Patterson several times in recent months about his approach to business. They met again Tuesday morning, and Fenves said he accepted Patterson's resignation.
Patterson is under contract until August 2019 and university regents will have to approach a negotiated separation agreement.
Fenves said Texas will hire Houston attorney Mike Perrin, a former Longhorns football player, as interim athletic director.
NHL
PHILADELPHIA (AP) – Former Philadelphia Flyers left wing Simon Gagne retired on Tuesday after a 14-year career in the NHL.
Gagne was a four-time All-Star who scored 291 goals and had 310 assists for 601 points. He played 11 seasons with the Flyers, won a Stanley Cup with the Los Angeles Kings in 2012 and also played for Tampa Bay and Boston.
Gagne thanked his trainers and teammates in a statement:
''You inspired me to surpass myself. You made me understand that you need more than talent; it takes sacrifice and discipline and you need to work harder than your rivals. I also wish to thank my fans. Every evening, you energized me and inspired me to perform.''
Gagne ranks ninth on the Flyers' all-time list in goals (264) and 10th in points (535) and games played (691). He's fourth in both goals and points among left wings in Philadelphia history. Gagne had 32 goals and 15 assists for 47 points in 90 playoff games with the Flyers.
The 35-year-old Gagne had seven 20-goal seasons, including two with 40-plus goals.
COLLEGE FOOTBALL
NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. (AP) – Two former Rutgers football players have been accused of stealing cash and marijuana from another student in a dorm room.
The Middlesex County Prosecutor's Office announced the charges Tuesday, saying the robbery was in December.
Lloyd Terry was dismissed from the team last week after being arrested and accused of a role in an April home invasion robbery. Jamil Pollard, who was on the football roster last year, was arrested Monday in Camden on the alleged dorm room robbery.
This month, school officials have kicked off six players and suspended a seventh for alleged criminal activity. On Monday, Rutgers athletic director Julie Hermann met with the team and expressed support for coach Kyle Flood.
Flood is being investigated for possible improper contact with a teacher about a player's grade.
SWIMMING
SYDNEY (AP) – Swimming Australia says former Olympic champion Kylie Palmer has received a reprimand and warning from world governing body FINA over a positive doping test two years ago.
Palmer, a member of the Australian 4×200-meter freestyle relay team which won gold at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, tested positive to low levels of a banned masking agent at the 2013 world championships in Barcelona, but she was not notified of the failed test until earlier this year.
She denied taking performance-enhancing drugs, but the 25-year-old freestyler accepted a provisional suspension, ruling her out of July's world championships in Russia.
Swimming Australia said on its website Wednesday that a FINA doping tribunal issued Palmer with a reprimand and warning, allowing her to resume her bid to compete at next year's Rio Olympics.
GOLF
LAKE FOREST, Ill. (AP) – David Feherty signed a contract with NBC Sports that will put him on the broadcast team with Johnny Miller, allow him to extend his popular ''Feherty'' series on Golf Channel and possibly lead to new ventures for golf's funnyman.
Feherty had been with CBS Sports for nearly two decades and developed into one of golf's most famous on-course reporters with his mix of irreverence and Irish humor. He didn't renew his contract after CBS' final golf broadcast at The Barclays three weeks ago.
NBCUniversal will be his exclusive network home, meaning Feherty likely will be working all four days of tournaments that are broadcast by Golf Channel on the weekdays and NBC Sports on the weekend. He will split time between analysis from the tower and on the ground.
