If college basketball ended today, these current eras of Iowa State and Virginia basketball would be remembered similarly.

The super-high expectations, the terrific regular-season records, the veteran star players in Georges Niang and Malcolm Brogdon that two programs hoped would help lead them to the NCAA’s promised land, and the previous two seasons littered with disappointing March Madness runs that ended earlier than many more had hoped.

College basketball won’t end today, though, and either Niang’s Cyclones or Brogdon’s Cavaliers will finally push a bit closer to every college hoopster’s dream: a national championship.

Destined for an Elite Eight matchup two seasons ago, both lost in the Sweet 16 before it ever happened. Last season, Iowa State was upset in the first round by a No. 14 seed, while Virginia lost to Michigan State for the second consecutive season — this time in the Round of 32.

Who will take the next step toward the mountaintop? Find out Friday night on CBS, or online via NCAA.com.
